Behind every successful regional competition is a team of countless volunteers who dedicate their time, experience and passion to their regional bee program. This year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee recognizes Tom Wadsworth of Dixon, Illinois, for his 43-year commitment to young spellers.
“I had a mission since day one to make sure these kids feel totally at ease,” Wadsworth said. “So that they only worry about their word and that they do the best they can, as relaxed as possible.”
Wadsworth makes sure the students are as prepared as they can be. Rather than waiting until the big day to give them guidance, he conducts a rehearsal for the spellers the night before the competition. This provides the spellers the opportunity to practice in front of a small audience of parents.
Wadsworth offers advice on when to slow down, encourages them to take deep breaths and reminds them that it’s OK to make a mistake.
We would like to thank all of the volunteers who assist with regional competitions throughout the year. The opportunity to nominate a volunteer in your program for next year’s award will be available later this fall.
The Regional Partner of the Year, Regional Volunteer of the Year, and the Educator of the Year will be recognized at Bee Week for their contributions. You can read more about the award winners in this year's edition of the Bee Keeper magazine, which will be shipped to you prior to the National Competition in May.
